WHITTLESEA STATION

I think there are other examples of spelling mistakes in station names - the town is called 'Whittlesey'. It is a typical small Fen station - bus shelters, that's your lot. However, one of only 30 remaining hand-operated crossings is here and it has staggered platforms, the down platform being about 50 yards west of the up. There is no footbridge so its quite an expedition to change platforms via the level crossing. Most of the signals are still semaphores and the signalbox, for some reason always painted green, is also very nice. A row of wooden posts spoils the shot from the down platform but, as the sun is always here, there is little alternative. Unitl quite recently, the station generated freight but is now only patronised by ONE's Peterborough - Liverpool St. service and a few peak-hours Central services. There is even talk of closing the station as it is about 2 miles out of town and not very heavily used.
